LG improves PC monitors with IPS Black: high contrast and blacks

When buying IPS monitors, we know that this technology offers us better colors and viewing angles than VA and TN monitors. However, IPSs still show up as an inferior option to OLEDs, in terms of contrast and deep blacks. Thus, LG shows its new IPS Black panels, which arrive to achieve deeper blacks.IPS panels are one of the best options we have today to enjoy great image and color quality. In addition, these have advanced over the years and today we can opt for IPS monitors with 144 Hz or more and refresh rates of 1 ms.Thus, you no longer have to go for a TN panel to enjoy good fluidity when playing. However, these panels suffer from the well-known IPS Glow and that is, they emanate more brightness on dark backgrounds and black colors, especially if we look from the side. While conventional IPS panels typically offer a typical contrast ratio of 1,000:1, with LG IPS Black this doubles to 2,000:1.Thus, they manage to get closer to the VA Panels, which have an average contrast of 3,000:1.But this is the theory, now we have to go into practice to see if this is true. For this reason, monitor expert Simon Baker, from the well-known TFT Central, reviewed the Dell UltraSharp U3223QE with LG IPS Black technology. He begins the review by analyzing the contrast measurement and seeing that it complies with what was expected. And it is that, with a measurement of 1,983: 1 from the factory and 1,972: 1 after calibration, he achieves what LG promised. To achieve this they have not had to increase the brightness, but obtain much deeper black levels. These reach in the Dell U3223QE monitor a value of 0.06 cd/m², while conventional IPS panels reach 0.10 cd/m².Thus, monitors with LG's IPS Black technology show that their blacks are less bright and darker. In fact, Baker in the review shows a comparison table between TN, VA, IPS and OLED monitors. Here the IPS Black outperforms all its rivals in its category and even several VA monitors in contrast. However, the practically infinite contrast ratio of OLEDs makes them unbeatable in this sector.Despite the benefits that LG's IPS Black offers us, effectively doubling the contrast and giving deeper blacks, we will not be able to take advantage of them in games. And it is that, the first monitors that release this technology are limited to a refresh rate of only 60 Hz. Currently, all of us who have played at 120 Hz or more, know the difference in fluidity between one and the other. So, it is not a great option if your main use is to play video games. In addition, nobody knows if they will arrive with a higher refresh rate in the future, since this IPS Black is still taking its first steps. In addition, Baker himself in the tests carried out ensures that they continue to show symptoms of IPS Glow when viewed from an angle, although this is reduced.Seen from the front, the glare of the IPS is much lower compared to other LG panels without this technology.Additionally, LG will have rivals for its IPS Black, as BOE announces its True Black, which will also achieve deeper blacks. The latter has stated that they have their first panels in production and will be launched on the market soon.
